Upper Riverside Trail The trail along the Pedernales River. The Upper Riverside Trail on the southern half of the park tends to be a bit more open and level, compared to other side. (Photo by Austin Explorer) Rock Pile The southern half of the Upper River Trail still has some obstacles in your way now and then. (Photo by Austin Explorer) Step Up to the North The northern river side trail is more tree-covered and a bit farther from the river. It's also less crowded and rockier. All-in-all a good thing. Trail View The trail on the north side follows the base of the rock face, occasionally darting between large boulders that have calved off of face. (Photo by Austin Explorer)

Beautiful day and wonderful hike. It was our first visit to the park and we were very pleasantly surprised. Great views along the rim trail. We also walked the base of the cliffs and it was just gorgeous. Quite a few folks climbing and a few fishing but there were definitely places of solitude. We'll be back.
Nice trails, with more to come

This was my first trip to Reimers, so I was not sure what to expect. I hiked the climbing access trails near the river's edge practically from one end of the park to the other.  There were plenty of people in and around Reimer's Canyon where the more popular climbing routes are located, but few people elsewhere.  The trail downstream from the River Level Parking area though was almost deserted.  I only saw one other person on the trail.  If the park's master plan gets implemented this park will have even more in store for us.

We walked down the canyon until we could see the climbing wall.  It was really pretty here, but we couldn't tell if there was a trail that would wind down to the river so we decided to hike the bluff.  A really beautiful hike here though in some areas it was hard to determine where to cross the little ravine.  However, we figured it out and went all the way to the beach which is really nice.  The river is gorgeous and our dogs really liked swimming for a bit.  Great place to hike with dogs as there are several places they can cool off and drink water.  Along the bluff hike there are several interesting geological sites.  We saw some small caves.  Next time, I'd like to hike one of the double diamond trails for the mountain bikers.  The topo map drawn next to the difficulty levels seems to offer really varied ups and downs.  Definitely plan on hiking more here.  If anyone hikes down to the climbing wall, please comment on the trails that go off from there.

Hiking Trails Not Great

While the Pedernales river was amazing and beautiful especially from the tops of the bluffs, it was difficult to actually follow the trails for hiking.  They look much like deer tracks than trails.  That being said, we didn't pass anyone in a mile or so of hiking which was terrific.

Looking forward to going back

We took the easier paths, from the first parking lot to the river overlook, then down to the river, along the bank, and back again. It was one of the first pretty days of the month so we ran into about a dozen or so people. Didn't have the best shoes on for hiking so we'll be going back with our boots to climb and explore, soon.

Past the first parking area...Go almost to the river to park. There are trash cans and a small parking area there just before the road takes a huge dive. Mark this waypoint...Part 1 - solitude: Start your hike here by going down the road and taking a right and follow the dirt road till it ends. Cross the gully and catch up with the trail at the base of the rocks on the bluff. This is the double diamond. Follow that trail until you see your car. Part 2: Then walk back to the first parking area -lots of people- (you will see the Alamo on the way). The first parking area is where the Grotto is. Walk down it and then go to the left and puddle around. Watch the mountain climbers. Then go back the other way. Down river. It gets pretty rough but you will find a way to get up and back about 150 yards from your car(waypoint). So much to see. Take a camera and binoculars. You will do this several times...a real 5 star hike.
Very scenic near the cave and river.

I spent a few hours at this new county park the other day and found it very enjoyable. There is some very pretty scenery in the small canyon where the rock climbing takes place, as well as along the Pedernales River. There are many miles of trails that are open for hiking, but hikers may find them a little frustrating because they were designed by mountain bikers, and therefore definitely do not go in a straight line! Some of my favorite areas so far include the Grotto: 30 21.782 98 07.418, the Bluff: 30 21.781 98 07.516, and the Beach: 30 22.082 98 07.870. Also, if you go to the bluff and then walk North about 100 yards, look to the South and in the distance your can see the set for the movie "The Alamo". (Take binoculars.) It will undoubtedly be more crowded on the weekends, but when I was there on a Thursday, I saw perhaps a half-dozen people in the climbing area near the cave, and no-one on the hike/bike trails. It's also a good place for bird-watching.
